Authorities are still searching for a couple feared trapped after a section of the Davao-Bukidnon Road collapsed in Barangay Palacapao, Quezon, Bukidnon, on the night of October 18.
Barangay Captain Renaldo Nietes told Brigada News that the victims, identified as Elly and Telma Ubatay, may have been caught in the collapse while driving home from the market. Video footage obtained by Brigada showed a green mini-vehicle believed to belong to the couple at the site of the landslide.
The incident occurred past 10 p.m. Friday, following an earthquake and heavy rains in the area. As of October 20, the affected road section remains closed to all motorists.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Northern Mindanao has issued alternative routes for travelers from Northern Mindanao heading to Davao City. Light vehicles may pass through San Fernando, Bukidnon, leading to Talaingod and Panabo City in Davao del Norte, or via Matalam to Arakan, Cotabato, exiting at Marilog, Davao City. All types of vehicles may also take the Maramag-Carmen-Kabacan route toward Digos City, Davao del Sur.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said experts will be sent to investigate the cause of the road collapse to prevent similar incidents.
