Senate President Alan Cayetano has dismissed rumors of a possible coup d’etat against his leadership, saying the Senate majority bloc remains intact.
In an ambush interview with members of the Senate media, Cayetano confirmed that all 13 members of the majority bloc continue to support the group.
According to Cayetano, there will be no defections within their ranks despite speculation of a leadership challenge.
Prior to the interview, Senators Rodante Marcoleta, Joel Villanueva, Robin Padilla and Mark Villar were seen coming from Cayetano’s office.
Meanwhile, Sen. Risa Hontiveros said she is confident that Sen. Win Gatchalian would perform well as Senate President if he is eventually elected to the position.
Hontiveros said she has worked with Gatchalian for about a decade and considers him a serious legislator. She added that Gatchalian is among the senators who recognize the importance of protecting the dignity and reputation of the Senate as an institution.
The senator made the remarks amid ongoing discussions regarding the Senate leadership.
Recently, Sen. Kiko Pangilinan said that Gatchalian is the preferred candidate of the Solid Bloc 11, or SB-11, for the Senate presidency.
For his part, Gatchalian said he is prepared to assume the role if he is elected by his fellow senators.
The statements from both sides came as speculation continues over the future leadership of the Senate, although Cayetano maintained that the majority bloc remains united and committed to its current composition.
