Iloilo City will conduct a thorough inspection of areas that frequently flood during rainfall to identify the root causes ahead of the rainy season.
Mayor Jerry Treñas led a meeting on Tuesday, May 27, with representatives from the City Engineer’s Office (CEO), Office of the Building Official, General Services Office (GSO), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and the Iloilo City District Engineering Office to address the city’s ongoing flooding issues.
The inspection will begin at La Paz Plaza, move along Huervana Street, and continue through General Luna-Mabini and Jalandoni Streets on Thursday. The team will assess the drainage systems and determine why flooding persists despite the large drainage infrastructure installed by the DPWH.
The inspection will focus on Jaro, Mandurriao, La Paz, and the City Proper. Authorities aim to pinpoint specific issues within the drainage network that contribute to the recurring flooding.
To help address the problem, the DPWH said that it will upgrade the inlets to better handle heavy rainfall. The ongoing drainage projects in La Paz and the City Proper will also relieve flooding once they connect to the city’s pumping stations.
Meanwhile, the GSO will assist by clearing clogged inlets, which have contributed to drainage blockages and worsened flooding.*
