Musician Elijah Allman, son of Cher and late Gregg Allman, was hospitalized June 14 after an overdose at a rental home in Landers, Calif., about 160 miles from Hollywood, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities responded at about 1:25 p.m. to a 911 call involving erratic behavior. They found drugs inside the residence and rushed Allman to hospital. Law enforcement identified the man as 48-year-old Elijah Allman, known on stage as P. Exeter Blue.
A source close to the family said Allman “is extremely lucky to be alive” and noted the incident is devastating for Cher. She had pursued a conservatorship in late 2023, fearing her son was unable to manage his finances due to mental health and substance abuse.
Conservatorship attempt and medical history
Cher’s temporary conservatorship petition claimed Allman earned about $120,000 annually and was eligible for trust distributions but had used or intended to use money on drugs. The filing also referenced multiple psychiatric holds under California’s 5150 law.
Although the conservatorship was rejected and the case entered mediation, a private agreement reached last September ended the court effort. Sources told Star Cher agreed to “tough love” after Allman pledged sobriety—but relapses soon followed. His father Gregg Allman battled decades of substance abuse before dying of liver cancer in 2017.
Cher’s heartbreak and tough love
Cher, now 79, reportedly feared for her son’s life when she pursued legal control. A source recalled she believed he might not survive another year without intervention.
Allman had publicly admitted struggles with drugs beginning at age 11, including heroin, ecstasy and marijuana. He described past overdose scares, but after the 2024 settlement he vowed to stay sober. A family confidant said Cher wanted to believe him but ultimately had to step back.
Ex-wife offers support
His estranged wife, Marieangela King Allman, who filed for divorce in April, issued a statement June 15 saying she will always root for him after the overdose. The legal split reportedly drew more attention to his ongoing battle with addiction.
Medical update and future uncertainty
While officials confirmed Allman was hospitalized, they did not provide further updates. The sheriff’s department noted that drugs were found at the scene but withheld specifics.
Cher’s network voiced relief at his survival but fear that her son’s pattern may spiral again. With conservatorship no longer in effect, questions linger over how family and loved ones will intervene next—even as Elijah’s future hangs in the balance.
