A landslide struck a gasoline station and hardware store in Barangay Tabionan, San Fernando, Cebu, early Thursday, Sept. 26, following continuous rains triggered by Typhoon Opong.
Photos taken by residents showed a portion of the mountainside collapsing and covering the establishments with soil and debris. The incident immediately spread online, raising concerns about business and community safety in the landslide-prone area.
Local government personnel quickly responded to the site, launching clearing operations to reopen access and reduce hazards. A backhoe and dump truck were deployed to remove large amounts of earth and other debris that buried parts of the property.
Authorities reminded the public to avoid areas vulnerable to landslides, especially during heavy rains caused by the typhoon and the southwest monsoon. Officials stressed the need for vigilance while adverse weather conditions continue to affect Cebu and nearby provinces.
The incident highlighted ongoing risks to communities living and working near steep slopes, where safety concerns intensify during typhoon season.
