Canada’s Jesse Marsch sees red as team takes down U.S. in dramatic 2-1 Nations League win

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch was sent off early in the second half during his team’s 2-1 victory over the United States in the Concacaf Nations League third-place match on Sunday.

The match, held at SoFi Stadium, saw intense moments as Marsch expressed frustration over refereeing decisions. The turning point came when match official Katia Garcia denied a penalty after forward Jonathan David appeared to go down in the box without contact. Moments earlier, Canada also protested another non-call when Tyler Adams and David collided inside the penalty area.

Marsch’s strong reaction led to a direct red card, forcing him to watch the rest of the match from the sidelines.

Canada Secures Victory Despite Marsch’s Ejection

Just minutes after Marsch’s dismissal, Canada regained the lead in the 59th minute when David delivered a spectacular goal. The team had initially taken a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute with a goal from Tani Oluwaseyi, but the U.S. responded before halftime with an equalizer from Patrick Agyemang.

Assistant coach Mauro Biello stepped in after Marsch’s ejection and later explained that the incident had a motivating effect on the team. He said Canada did not want to experience a repeat of their controversial loss to Mexico in the semifinals and that Marsch was passionately defending his players.

“Jesse was standing up for his team, and in the end, it galvanized the boys,” Biello said. “They saw how much it meant to him, and we were able to come back and win the game.”

U.S. Finishes Fourth After Dominating Previous Tournaments

The U.S. had won all three previous editions of the Concacaf Nations League, but Sunday’s loss left them outside the podium in fourth place. The Americans had been eliminated from championship contention after a 1-0 loss to Panama in the semifinals. Canada, on the other hand, was coming off a defeat to Mexico.

Marsch, who previously coached in Europe and the MLS, was once considered a leading candidate for the U.S. men’s national team head coaching job in 2023. However, the position ultimately went back to Gregg Berhalter. Marsch later took over as Canada’s head coach, aiming to reshape the program ahead of future international tournaments.

Meanwhile, Mexico and Panama were set to face off later Sunday night in the final at SoFi Stadium, determining the new Concacaf Nations League champion.
