Two brothers died after drowning at a coastal area in Barangay San Ignacio, Manay, Davao Oriental on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
The victims were identified as Romel Malingkis Pedro, 14, and Edcel Malingkis Pedro, 12. They were residents of Purok Simsimin, Barangay Dadong, Tarragona, Davao Oriental.
Initial information from authorities said the incident happened shortly past 1 p.m. at the shoreline in Purok Laguidong, Barangay San Ignacio. Edcel was reportedly swept toward a deeper part of the sea after being carried by a strong current.
Romel attempted to rescue his younger brother, but both were carried away by the current.
Rescuers later retrieved the victims from the water and rushed them to a medical facility. However, both were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.
Family members were left grieving following the sudden deaths of the siblings.
Authorities said initial findings indicate that strong sea currents contributed to the incident. Further details were not immediately available.
