Brazil’s data protection regulator has fined TikTok 153.7 million reais, or nearly $30 million, over alleged failures to protect the personal data of children and teenagers.
The National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) said TikTok had failed to take sufficient measures to prevent minors from accessing the platform and to ensure their personal information was properly protected from unauthorized collection and processing.
As part of the ruling, the regulator ordered TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to delete data allegedly collected in violation of regulations and submit a compliance plan aimed at strengthening protections for young users.
The company was also ordered to implement stricter privacy settings for users under 16, strengthen parental supervision tools, and introduce tighter content filters.
TikTok has 10 days to appeal the fine.
