Bariou, Lustre allege harassment over Siargao Bridge protest

Entrepreneur Christophe Bariou and actress Nadine Lustre claimed they were harassed after publicly opposing the controversial Union–Malinao Bridge Project in Siargao.

Bariou revealed that unidentified individuals allegedly offered to “settle” the bridge issue in exchange for ₱50 million, which they immediately refused.

Following their refusal, Bariou said their businesses in Siargao faced unwarranted inspections, permit delays, and intimidation from people claiming to represent local officials.

He added that his staff were questioned, business operations disrupted, and some permits were withheld despite full compliance with local requirements.

Bariou and Lustre have long voiced environmental concerns about the bridge’s possible effects on mangroves, coral reefs, and coastal communities’ livelihoods.

The Union–Malinao Bridge Project aims to connect the municipalities of General Luna and Dapa, but environmental advocates criticized its approval process and lack of consultations.

Bariou said he filed formal complaints with the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA), Ombudsman Mindanao, and the Supreme Court to investigate alleged corruption and abuse of power.

ARTA reportedly ruled in favor of Bariou, ordering the release of his business permit after determining that delays were unjustified and politically motivated.

He also urged national agencies such as DENR to monitor the project’s compliance with environmental laws and to suspend work pending investigation.

Accordingly, the DENR had earlier halted parts of the project due to missing environmental clearances and procedural violations.

Supporters of Bariou and Lustre emphasized that their advocacy focuses on protecting Siargao’s ecosystem and ensuring transparency in government-funded infrastructure projects.
As of now, the local government has yet to issue an official statement addressing Bariou’s allegations and the pending legal complaints.
