Several residents of Barangay Landan in Polomolok, South Cotabato, welcomed the implementation of an Anti-Gossip Ordinance aimed at preventing community disputes and misunderstandings.
The barangay introduced the measure after repeated conflicts arose from spreading false information, malicious gossip, and unfounded rumors damaging individuals’ reputations within the community.
Barangay Kagawad Joey Salazar Minggito, author of Barangay Ordinance No. 8, Series of 2026, said the measure protects residents from harmful gossip.
He explained that many disputes brought before barangay officials originated from false stories, forcing local leaders to spend time settling avoidable misunderstandings.
Several residents expressed support for the ordinance, saying irresponsible gossip often destroys friendships, damages family relationships, and creates unnecessary tension among neighbors living peacefully together.
They believe discouraging malicious rumors will strengthen trust, promote respect, and encourage residents to resolve concerns through proper communication instead of spreading misinformation.
Minggito clarified that the ordinance does not prohibit freedom of expression but specifically targets malicious gossip supported by sufficient evidence during investigations.
He added that no formal complaints have reached the barangay since authorities approved the measure, indicating increased public awareness about its penalties.
The Sangguniang Bayan of Polomolok approved the ordinance on July 10, 2026, authorizing its implementation throughout Barangay Landan to promote harmony and accountability.
Violators face fines of ₱1,000 for the first offense, ₱1,500 for the second offense, and a mandatory public apology on social media when evidence establishes responsibility.
Barangay officials hope the ordinance will reduce conflicts, strengthen neighborhood relationships, and encourage a more respectful and responsible community.
