At 7 years, HBONI builds bridges where others saw borders

In an island where geography often shapes access, peace, and development, the Hope Builders Organization Negros Island Inc. (HBONI) has grown into a unifying force—bridging generations, institutions, and communities.

HBONI celebrated its 7th founding anniversary and held its 3rd General Assembly on Saturday, April 26, at the Central Philippines State University’s Alumni Hall in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

More than 70 partners—from government agencies to civil society organizations—joined the gathering to celebrate not only HBONI’s milestones but also a growing movement grounded in collaboration and shared purpose.

HBONI founder and CEO Kenneth Bacala presented the organization’s 2024 accomplishments before the participants, and shared how the civic group expanded outreach in remote barangays, strengthened inter-agency collaboration, and grew its youth literacy programs.

HBONI has long stood at the forefront of community-driven efforts across Negros Island, prioritizing support for underserved and remote areas often left behind by mainstream development.

6th District Representative Mercedes K. Alvarez reaffirmed her support for the group.

“I feel very at home with your organization [HBONI], because this is not the first time that I have worked with you,” Alvarez said.

“I know that HBONI extends help, and many have benefited from it. But before we do something, we must empathize first… Thank you, HBONI, for always remembering me. Rest assured, I will continue to be your partner, for I believe in what you do, and I hope that your services and program will have a lasting impact on the communities you serve,” she added.

Lieutenant Colonel Ziegfred D. Tayaban, commanding officer of the 94th Infantry Battalion, commended HBONI’s role in promoting peace in conflict-prone areas.

“I have personally witnessed how your dedication can be a powerful force, not only in community issues, but also in the deeper problems of our youth,” Tayaban said.

“You have stood alongside us with the PNP and the military and other workers of the government, shoulder to shoulder in our mission to win the peace in Negros Island,” he added.

Meanwhile, Himamaylan City Vice Mayor Justin Gatuslao, one of HBONI’s earliest partners, also praised the youth-serving organization for uniting diverse sectors.

“I think you have proven to be not only a force for good but a force for bringing people together. Partners typically do not work together, and you’re able to fit together for your projects and especially for the future generations of our country,” he said.

Gatuslao, who has supported HBONI’s youth empowerment and reading programs since its early years, added that, “I am hoping that your organization continues to grow and you’re able to spread your influence throughout not only Southern Negros but the rest of Negros Occidental as well… You can count on me through continued partnership for the success of Hope Builders.”
