Army, PNP recover high-powered firearms from abandoned vehicle in Lanao del Sur

Security forces recovered multiple high-powered firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from an abandoned vehicle during a joint operation in Barangay Curahab, Malabang, Lanao del Sur  on March 8, 2026.

The operation involved troops from the Philippine Army’s 51st Infantry Battalion under the 1st Infantry Division, working with personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Malabang. Authorities responded after receiving reports of indiscriminate firing in the area.

During clearing operations, the joint team discovered an unattended minivan with plate number KBF 8095. The vehicle had no pertinent documents. Upon inspection, authorities found several firearms, ammunition, and military paraphernalia inside.

Recovered items included a modified Smith & Wesson Carbine, several M16A1 rifles, an M16A1 equipped with an M203 grenade launcher, an M14 rifle, and a Bushmaster Carbine.

Security forces also seized multiple magazines and ammunition, including four M14 magazines with 29 rounds, 12 M16 20-round magazines, and 32 M16 30-round magazines. Authorities recovered 493 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition, 25 empty 5.56mm shells, and 18 high-explosive 40mm rounds for the M203 grenade launcher.

Seven assorted bandoleers and rigs were also found inside the vehicle.

All recovered items are undergoing documentation and proper markings. Authorities said the firearms and ammunition will be submitted to the PNP Crime Laboratory in Marawi City for ballistic examination and further investigation.

Brig. Gen. Yasser R. Bara, commander of the 101st Infantry Brigade, said the recovery resulted from the quick coordination between Army troops and police.

Authorities are continuing follow-up investigations to identify those responsible for the abandoned vehicle and the reported indiscriminate firing.
