Army honors four soldiers killed in Lanao del Norte ambush

The Philippine Army paid tribute to four soldiers killed in an ambush in Munai, Lanao del Norte, honoring their sacrifice and service to the communities they were assigned to protect.

In a statement, the Army said the soldiers gave their lives while carrying out their duty in service of the nation and the Filipino people. Officials recognized their bravery and dedication in helping maintain peace and security in the areas where they were deployed.

The fallen soldiers were identified as Staff Sgt. Diosito Araya of the 1st Civil Military Operations Battalion, Sgt. Gilbert Arnoza of the 106th Infantry Battalion, Sgt. Junel Calgas of the 97th Infantry Battalion, and Private Sean Mark Laniton of the 44th Infantry Battalion.

The Army said their deaths were a reminder of the risks faced by personnel assigned to safeguard communities, particularly those involved in peace-building and humanitarian efforts.

The soldiers were killed during an ambush on Jan. 23 in Barangay Liningding, Munai, according to military and police officials. The Western Mindanao Command said the troops were part of Task Unit TABANG under the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade. Another soldier was wounded and reported in stable condition.

Initial police reports indicated the attackers were believed to be members of the Dawlah Islamiyah–Maute Group.

Following the incident, security forces launched pursuit and clearing operations while authorities increased checkpoints and patrols across vulnerable areas in Lanao del Norte.

The Western Mindanao Command condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the families of the slain soldiers, as the Army and the public continue to mourn their loss.
