Akbayan Party-list has formally declared its support for Sen. Risa Hontiveros as its candidate for the 2028 presidential election.

Akbayan said it recognizes the growing calls for Hontiveros to seek the presidency and expressed confidence in her readiness to serve as the standard-bearer of the democratic opposition.
The party also said that amid what it described as a deep governance crisis, as well as the fatigue, hardships and disappointment experienced by millions of Filipinos, many people continue to search for a leader with integrity, competence and a clear set of principles.
According to Akbayan, these qualities make Hontiveros a potential leader capable of representing the aspirations of those seeking change and reform.
The endorsement marks the party’s formal backing of the senator’s possible presidential campaign two years before the next national elections.
Hontiveros had previously stated that she is open to running for president in 2028.
However, she also stressed that the opposition should unite behind a single standard-bearer for the presidential race.
