The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) clarified that the security unit assigned to Vice President Sara Duterte was not disbanded but merely reorganized.
In a statement, the AFP said the Vice Presidential Security and Protection Group (VPSPG) was streamlined into a broader unit now called the AFP Security and Protection Group. The move, according to the AFP, is part of a rationalization and streamlining effort approved by the Department of National Defense in February 2025.
The restructuring aims to unify and enhance the efficiency of all AFP-led security and protection operations — not only for the current vice president but for those who will assume the role in the future.
The AFP noted that the VPSPG was only created in June 2022. Before its formation, vice presidential security duties were handled by the Security and Protection Battalion under the AFP General Headquarters and the Headquarters Support Command, as there was no dedicated unit at that time.
The military also urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation. Instead, it called on citizens to use official communication platforms to promote unity and peace rather than division.
The clarification comes amid public confusion and speculation regarding the status of Vice President Sara Duterte’s security detail.
