Cristiano Ronaldo announces retirement from Portugal national team

Portugal’s football icon Cristiano Ronaldo is set to bring his international career to a close after announcing his decision to step away from the Portugal national team, ending a remarkable 23-year run with his country.

The 41-year-old forward revealed his decision in a social media post on Thursday, saying he is ready to give up the number 7 jersey he has famously worn throughout his career.

Ronaldo described the decision as an emotional one, acknowledging that leaving the national team was not something he could decide with his mind alone.

He also thanked his family, the Portuguese people, and the players, coaches, and staff who shared his journey over the years.

During his time with Portugal, Ronaldo established himself as the country’s most prolific international player, recording 234 appearances and 146 goals.

Both figures remain world records in men’s international football.

He also played a crucial role in Portugal’s rise to international success, captaining the team to its maiden European Championship title in 2016 before helping secure Nations League championships in 2019 and 2025.
