Sara Duterte reveals mother’s push for Baste’s national bid

Vice President Sara Duterte said she and her brother, Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, have not discussed his possible candidacy for president in the 2028 elections.

“We have not discussed with Mayor Sebastian Duterte his running for president,” Sara said.

However, the vice president revealed that their mother had previously told her to return to Davao City and let Baste pursue a national position.

“My mother really said that she wanted me to return to Davao, and that Baste should be the one to run in the national elections,” Sara said.

She also recalled her mother telling her, “Come home here to Davao,” followed by, “Let Baste handle the national [race].”

Sara’s remarks indicate that the suggestion came from their mother and was not the result of a discussion between Sara and Baste about his possible presidential candidacy.

Sara had earlier announced in February her intention to run for president in the 2028 elections.

Her latest statement places Baste’s name in discussions about the Duterte family’s possible plans for the 2028 national elections. However, Sara emphasized that she and her brother have not talked about his possible presidential bid.

For now, Sara’s statement only confirms her mother’s suggestion that Baste pursue a national position while Sara return to Davao City.
