Lea Salonga is making her highly anticipated return to the theater stage as she takes on the challenging role of Bernarda Alba in “The House of Bernarda Alba.”
The announcement comes shortly after the Filipina Broadway icon was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Salonga will portray Bernarda, a strict and controlling mother who fiercely protects her family while placing great importance on their reputation.
Despite the challenging role, Lea said the play is a story worth telling, especially for its themes on family, culture, and parenting.
She also emphasized the importance of understanding what drives Bernarda’s harsh rule over her household.
For Salonga, the role also hits close to home as she finds connections between Bernarda’s character and her own experience as a mother.
“The House of Bernarda Alba” is set to open in February 2027.
