Five people were injured in a shooting at Banga National High School in Banga, South Cotabato, shortly after 1 p.m. Friday, September 18, according to initial information reported by 95.7 Brigada News FM Koronadal.
Most of the victims were reportedly 14 years old, including three boys and one girl.
A male individual identified as the suspected gunman was also brought to the South Cotabato Provincial Hospital after reportedly shooting himself.
Authorities have yet to release further details as the investigation continues.
South Cotabato Gov. Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. appealed to the public to remain calm while authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Department of Education expressed concern over the shooting and reiterated that the safety of students, teachers and school personnel remains its priority.
DepEd said it is coordinating with the Schools Division Office, Regional Office, local authorities and law enforcement agencies to verify the details of the incident and provide necessary assistance to those affected.
The agency also said it is prepared to extend psychological first aid, as well as mental health and psychosocial support, to students and other individuals affected by the incident.
DepEd urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while the investigation is ongoing.
Meanwhile, classes in all schools across the municipality of Banga have been temporarily suspended following the shooting incident at Banga National High School.
Further updates are expected as authorities continue to investigate the incident and assess the condition of those injured.
