Former House Speaker Martin Romualdez has been transferred to the infirmary of the Quezon City Jail in Payatas after being moved from the hospital, according to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.
The BJMP said Romualdez is under medical monitoring alongside other persons deprived of liberty who require regular medical care.
The agency explained that the arrangement follows jail management policies and a directive from the Sandiganbayan to address Romualdez’s continuing medical needs.
The BJMP also emphasized that all persons deprived of liberty are entitled to equal, fair and humane treatment regardless of their status or position in government.
The transfer was ordered by the Sandiganbayan Third Division after the Philippine General Hospital determined that Romualdez was medically stable and could already be discharged.
According to the medical assessment cited in the report, Romualdez had a low risk of suffering a heart attack, while his hypertension and diabetes were under control.
Romualdez was arrested on Sept. 7 in connection with a plunder case involving an alleged P7.44 billion kickback from contractors and other individuals linked to flood control and infrastructure projects.
His transfer to the Payatas jail infirmary places him under continued medical observation while he remains in detention in connection with the case.
