An off-duty Philippine Coast Guard personnel rescued a 66-year-old fisherman who was found floating in the sea amid strong waves about 10 kilometers from Sitio Tinogboc in Caluya, Antique, on Sept. 8.
Petty Officer Third Class Dareen Eulogio of Coast Guard Station Occidental Mindoro spotted the fisherman at about 4:20 p.m. while aboard the M/V Ma. Cristina 1, which was traveling toward Caluya.
The sea was rough, and the vessel could not safely approach the fisherman. Eulogio then immediately jumped into the water and successfully rescued the 66-year-old fisherman.
The fisherman reportedly fell into the sea after large waves hit his motorized banca while he was fishing.
After the rescue, the fisherman was brought to the Port of Tongo. He was then turned over to the Coast Guard and the local government for assistance and medical evaluation.
The Philippine Coast Guard praised Eulogio for his quick response, courage and sacrifice in saving the fisherman’s life despite being off duty.
The incident highlights the immediate response of a Coast Guard personnel who intervened when a fisherman was left floating in rough waters.
