The death toll from a massive flash flood that struck areas in Nepal and along its border with Tibet has risen to at least 160, while hundreds remain missing.
According to Nepal’s Ministry of Tourism, around 403 tourists are still unaccounted for, including 341 foreign nationals. At least 28 police personnel are also missing and continue to be searched for.
The disaster has also disrupted Nepal’s power supply after around 430 megawatts of electricity capacity from hydropower and solar facilities were damaged by the floods.
Meanwhile, Chinese authorities reported three deaths and 265 people missing in Gyirong County in Tibet. Communications, electricity, and road access were cut off following massive mudslides triggered by the disaster.
Amid the widespread destruction, Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah called for unity and appealed for assistance from neighboring India and China to support evacuation and search-and-rescue operations.
The Nepal Army and rescue teams from various sectors have launched extensive search and response operations, deploying helicopters and specialized units to assist residents affected by the disaster.
