Mariel Padilla appeared to take a swipe at critics after her 2022 vlog discussing the qualifications of her husband, Senator Robin Padilla, resurfaced online and drew renewed criticism.
“Ang common sense pala ay hindi ganoon ka-common,” Mariel said in a social media post addressing the issue.
She clarified that she did not mean Robin literally participated in Congress, authored a bill, or voted for the passage of a law while he was in prison, noting that he was not yet a senator at the time.
Mariel was referring to Republic Act No. 8294, which amended provisions concerning the illegal possession, manufacture, acquisition, and disposition of firearms and ammunition.
She explained that Robin’s name became associated with the law because its provisions affected his case after he was convicted in 1995 of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
However, Robin was neither the author nor sponsor of the law, which was enacted in 1997.
According to Mariel, Robin served as a “case study” because he was among those interviewed in connection with the amendment of the law.
She said his experience illustrated how laws and changes in legislation can directly affect a person’s life.
