Gun discharges during play; 9-year-old boy shot in the head

Police are conducting an investigation after a nine-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the head during an alleged accidental shooting in Barangay San Isidro, General Santos City.

The incident happened on the evening of August 3 inside a house in Purok Neri, Arca Farm, where another minor reportedly handled a firearm.

Authorities received a report about the shooting at around 6:20 p.m. and immediately responded to the area.

The victim, identified only by the alias Vincent, was rushed to Dr. Jorge P. Royeca Hospital for treatment after sustaining a gunshot wound to the right side of his head.

Initial police investigation showed that another minor, identified by the alias Jimboy, allegedly found a .38-caliber revolver inside the house.

Investigators said the children reportedly played with the firearm until it suddenly discharged, striking Vincent in the head. Police have not yet released additional information regarding how the gun became accessible to the minors before the incident occurred.

The minor involved is now under police custody for proper documentation while investigators continue gathering evidence surrounding the shooting.

Authorities are expected to determine the firearm’s registered owner and establish liability for leaving the weapon unattended.
