Batangas Rep. Leandro Legarda Leviste has called on the House of Representatives to resume its investigation into the alleged flood control scandal, saying the inquiry should continue until it reaches what he described as a logical conclusion.
Speaking as the Iglesia ni Cristo held a rally along EDSA on Monday, Leviste said the investigation appeared to have been set aside after it was suspended and attention shifted to other issues.
He said the work of the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) had not produced sufficient results, which he said contributed to the continued public demonstrations.
In House Resolution 1169, Leviste argued that there was no “logical conclusion” based on the documents submitted by former Department of Public Works and Highways Undersecretary Catalina Cabral and Roberto Bernardo.
He said lawmakers should reconvene the hearings if they want to bring closure to the issue, particularly because some members of the House had allegedly been identified in connection with the controversy.
Leviste specifically cited statements attributed to 18 former bodyguards of former Congressman Elizaldy Co.
The lawmaker said the allegations raised in the documents and testimonies warrant further legislative scrutiny.
Meanwhile, Leviste defended the rally held along EDSA despite the heavy traffic it caused.
He said the gathering was a one-time event and argued that it was not solely for the interest of one group.
According to Leviste, the demonstration was part of a broader fight against corruption.
His remarks came as calls continued for further investigation into the alleged anomalies involving flood control projects.
Leviste maintained that resuming the congressional inquiry would help address unresolved questions surrounding the issue and provide the closure that, according to him, has yet to be achieved.
