NBI denies order to arrest Bato before SONA

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clarified that it has not received any order to arrest Sen. Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa before the State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in July.

In an interview, NBI Director Melvin Matibag said there was no directive from Malacañang regarding the timing of the senator’s possible arrest.

However, Matibag said it would be better if the arrest warrant against dela Rosa were served as soon as possible, adding that this is what the public allegedly wants to see.

Authorities continue to search for dela Rosa following the issuance of an arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in connection with his alleged role in the war on drugs campaign of the previous administration.

According to Matibag, the NBI receives information daily regarding the possible whereabouts of the senator. He noted, however, that not all reports received by the agency have been verified.

The NBI chief said he believes dela Rosa remains in the Philippines.

Matibag also warned that traveling abroad could be more risky for the senator because he could face arrest in another country under existing international agreements.

He added that the NBI is prepared to implement the arrest warrant at any time once dela Rosa is located.

According to Matibag, NBI agents will also use body cameras during the operation should the warrant be served.

The statement comes amid continued efforts by authorities to locate the senator following the issuance of the ICC warrant.

The NBI maintained that there is no specific timetable tied to the SONA and emphasized that any arrest operation would be carried out in accordance with existing procedures once the opportunity arises.
