7.5-foot saltwater crocodile rescued in Sarangani

A male saltwater crocodile measuring 7.5 feet was rescued by the Sarangani Provincial Wildlife Quick Response Team (SPWQRT) in Barangay Kawas, Alabel, Sarangani Province, on February 26, 2025.

Concerned citizen Reden Tapican discovered the crocodile trapped in Lorenzo Aqua Farm and immediately alerted authorities. A joint rescue operation was conducted by SPWQRT, the Philippine Coast Guard, PNP Maritime, Batas Dagat, and local environmental offices, including MENRO Alabel and Malapatan, along with the Sarangani provincial government and DENR offices from General Santos and Glan.

DENR 12 veterinarian Dr. Roy Mejorada examined the reptile and confirmed it was in good health. A DNA sample was also collected to determine its origin. The crocodile will be temporarily placed under DENR supervision in Davao for further observation.

Following the incident, the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office, through the Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (PAMO-SBPS), intensified crocodile patrols along Sarangani Bay and installed 23 reflectorized warning signs in areas where sightings have been reported, including Barangay Kawas. They also conducted an information campaign in 42 coastal communities to raise awareness about saltwater crocodiles.

Saltwater crocodile sightings have been previously reported in Sarangani’s coastal areas, highlighting the importance of continued monitoring and public awareness.
