Young barangay chairman killed in Lanao Del Sur ambush

A 25-year-old barangay chairman was killed while his companion was wounded in an ambush in Barangay Montay, Malabang, Lanao del Sur on Wednesday morning, April 9.

Police Regional Office–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR) identified the victim as Binhar Jalambre Alon Jawad, chairman of Barangay Baraas in Picong, Lanao del Sur. His companion was identified as 20-year-old Norhan Comilao Sarip.

Authorities said the two were traveling to Barangay Bacyawan to attend a graduation ceremony when unidentified gunmen ambushed them around 10 a.m. at a diversion road in Barangay Montay.

Jawad, who was driving, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital. Sarip was also injured and remains under medical treatment.

Responding police officers recovered several empty shells from an M16 rifle at the crime scene.

Jawad’s body has been claimed by his family as police continue a follow-up investigation to determine the motive and identify the suspects behind the attack.
