Truck rear-end crash kills motorcyclist in Zamboanga City

A tragic late night crash in Zamboanga City claimed a motorcyclist’s life after a speeding truck rammed him from behind.

The fatal accident happened at Sitio Mala, Barangay Panubigan, around 11:28 PM on January 23, 2026, in Zamboanga City area.

Police identified the victim as John Nelson Abdul Bustamante, 34, who was driving a Yamaha NMAX motorcycle that night alone.

Investigators said Bustamante was traveling behind two trucks when he decided to overtake along the highway late at night hours.

Upon noticing a pedestrian lane ahead, the motorcyclist suddenly slowed down, causing danger to vehicles behind him along the road.

A FOTON ten wheeler truck, driven by Kenniejun Bagongon Cababaros, failed to stop despite immediately applying brakes during the incident.

The truck violently struck the motorcycle from behind and ran over the rider, fatally severing his body on the roadway.

After the collision, the truck initially fled toward the city proper, triggering an immediate police coordination for swift apprehension efforts.

Authorities coordinated with another police station, leading to the truck driver’s surrender along the highway shortly after the fatal crash.

The suspect was brought to Zamboanga City Police Station Two for proper investigation and legal disposition following standard police procedures.

Police have secured both vehicles and coordinated with forensic investigators as the community mourns another road tragedy late night incident.
