Tragic Davao crash kills mother and infant

A devastating road crash in Purok 18, Barangay Marilog, Marilog District, Davao City left a young mother and her one-year-old son dead.

The collision, which occurred along the Davao-Bukidnon road, involved a motorcycle driven by Marlon Baclas, 22, and a van driven by Danny Gumanban Casas, 52.

According to initial investigations conducted by responding officers, both vehicles were traveling in opposite directions when Baclas’ motorcycle allegedly encroached into the lane of Casas’ van at a curve. The impact resulted in the immediate deaths of Baclas’ wife, Lea Landas Baclas, 19, and their one-year-old son, Mark Lester Baclas, who were passengers on the motorcycle.

Baclas, who was injured, was rushed to the Southern Philippines Medical Center by emergency responders. Casas, the van’s driver, was taken into custody for further investigation.

Police reports state that Baclas failed to present a valid driver’s license or vehicle registration documents at the scene. Investigators are determining whether reckless imprudence played a role in the fatal crash.

Charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, physical injury, and property damage are expected to be filed against Baclas.
