The The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service Foundation Inc. (TOWNS Foundation) has expressed disappointment over the recent political actions of Loren Legarda.
The group said it hopes Legarda would reflect on the principles she once upheld in the Senate.
Legarda is a TOWNS awardee and received the recognition in 1995 for excellence in media.
In a statement, TOWNS said, “Senator Loren Legarda has long been regarded as a woman of intellect, independence, courage, and public service – qualities for which she was honored by TOWNS. Precisely because of this distinction, her recent political decisions have caused deep dismay among many who once looked to her as model of principles leadership.”
According to the organization, it was disheartened by the senator’s alleged alignment with forces perceived to prioritize political protection over truth, accountability, and justice — actions that they said weaken public trust in institutions.
The TOWNS Foundation stressed that such developments erode Filipinos’ confidence in leadership, deepen cynicism among the youth, and damage the credibility of Philippine democracy before the international community.
Legarda was among the 13 senators who voted in favor of Alan Peter Cayetano becoming the new Senate President before the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte were transmitted to the Senate by the House of Representatives.
