Top NPA leader captured in Cotabato

In a significant victory for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP), three high-ranking leaders of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC) of the New People’s Army (NPA) were apprehended in Cotabato City on November 16, 2024.

The operation, conducted on Mabini Street, Bagua 3, led to the arrest of Ruel Villanueva Cabales, alias Aman, the Secretary of the SMRC. Alongside him, Catherine Apares Guinoo, alias Dewen, the Deputy Secretary and member of the SMRC Executive Committee (EXECOM), and Alma Mae Masalon, alias Memie, an NPA-SMRC member, were also captured.

The arrests were made through the enforcement of warrants for various charges, including illegal possession, manufacture, and acquisition of firearms, ammunition, and explosives, destructive arson, violation against or intimidation of persons, attempted murder, and crimes against international humanitarian law, genocide, and other crimes against humanity.

Major General Allan Hambala, Commander of the 10th Infantry (Agila) Division, praised the collaborative efforts of the military and law enforcement agencies involved.

The arrests underscore the dedication and synergy of the AFP and PNP in maintaining peace and security. The capture of these key individuals significantly contributes to the total defeat of the SMRC and a safer Southeastern Mindanao.
