The Taiwanese government has evacuated more than 14,000 residents living in mountainous areas as Typhoon Bavi approaches the island.
The evacuations came as authorities shut down much of the island in anticipation of heavy rainfall and strong winds, particularly in exposed areas.
Although the storm has slightly weakened and is not expected to make landfall in Taiwan, authorities continue to implement precautionary measures to prevent casualties.
Meanwhile, nearly all cities and counties across Taiwan declared a typhoon holiday for the day.
As a result, government offices, schools, and other institutions that normally operate on weekends have been temporarily closed.
