Patrolman killed responding to armed suspect in Cebu

A police officer was killed on Friday, June 27, after responding to reports of an armed man in Barangay Poblacion, Danao City, Cebu.

The victim, Patrolman Mark Gomer Ornopia of the Danao City Police Station, died after being shot by the suspect, identified as alias “Katipay,” 24, a resident of Toboso, Negros Occidental.

According to the initial police investigation, the suspect grabbed the service revolver of a pawnshop security guard while buying soft drinks. In an interview with Brigada News FM Cebu, the guard, identified as SG Lacio, said the suspect took the gun—loaded with three live rounds—and immediately pointed it at him.

Residents nearby quickly sought help, prompting Patrolman Ornopia and a personnel from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) to respond.

A brief chase followed. During the pursuit, “Katipay” shot Ornopia, fatally wounding him. The BJMP officer returned fire, hitting the suspect.

Both Ornopia and the suspect were rushed to a nearby hospital but were declared dead on arrival.

Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
