Passenger van slams parked truck in Samar; 4 dead

Four people were confirmed dead following a vehicular accident involving a passenger van and a parked truck early Tuesday morning, Feb. 10, in Basey, Samar.

The collision happened around 6:45 a.m. in Sitio Sugpuron, Barangay Balud, according to initial reports from authorities. The fatalities included the driver of the van, identified as alias Rom, 54, a resident of Alangalang, Leyte. Also killed were passengers identified as alias Nimfa, 57, of Borongan City; alias Licia, 71; and alias Mel.

Based on a report from Police Regional Office 8, the van was traveling from Borongan in Eastern Samar and heading to Tacloban City at the time of the crash. The vehicle was carrying nine passengers when the incident occurred.

Initial investigation by the Basey Municipal Police Station found that the van suddenly swerved into the opposite lane before colliding with a parked flatbed truck along the road.

Authorities said the circumstances that caused the van to veer into the other lane remain under investigation. Police are continuing to gather information and assess evidence related to the crash.

The incident resulted in multiple fatalities and prompted a response from local authorities. The identities of the victims were confirmed through initial reports, while the condition of other passengers was not detailed in the initial information released.
