Man rescued twice after getting trapped in Cebu City canals

Authorities in Cebu City rescued a man for the second time in as many days after he was trapped inside a canal, reportedly while searching for coins.

The incident happened Monday, August 4, along Salinas Drive in Barangay Lahug. According to reports, the man entered the canal near UCMA Village and made his way toward the IT Park area. He later called for help when he felt dizzy and could not get out.

Responders from the Lahug Fire and Rescue, the Bureau of Fire Protection–Special Rescue Force, and the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office–Special Rescue Squad arrived at the scene. They opened the canal cover and pulled the man to safety.

Authorities said the same man was rescued just a day earlier, Sunday, August 3, in Barangay Sto. Niño. In that case, he had also become trapped inside a canal along Lopez Street.

Officials reminded the public not to enter drainage systems or canals due to the risks of injury, illness, or being trapped. Such spaces can contain harmful substances, have poor air circulation, and present escape hazards.

No injuries were reported in either incident, and the man’s identity was not disclosed by authorities.
