LG Display has introduced a groundbreaking stretchable screen that can expand by up to 50%, marking an unprecedented achievement in flexible display technology. This innovation, developed in collaboration with 19 industry, academic, and research partners, was unveiled at the Stretchable Display Development National Project Final Performance Sharing Meeting held on Nov. 8 at LG Science Park in Magok, Seoul. This meeting marked the completion of a five-year national research initiative that began in 2020.
LG’s Stretchable Display: A New Era in Technology
The new 12-inch prototype can stretch to an impressive 18 inches while maintaining complete RGB color accuracy and a resolution of 100 pixels per inch (ppi). This flexible display showcases durability and can withstand over 10,000 stretches without loss of functionality. LG achieved this feat using micro-LEDs smaller than 40 micrometers, allowing the display to maintain image clarity even under extreme conditions, such as significant temperature changes or physical impacts.
Not only does this stretchable screen showcase resilience, but it also boasts a thin and lightweight design. These attributes make it ideal for diverse applications, from automotive interfaces to wearable technology. During a demonstration, an LG representative showed the display’s potential by transforming it into a jog dial shape on an automotive dashboard, illustrating its adaptability and usability.
Expanding Horizons in Wearables and Fashion
LG’s stretchable display technology offers new possibilities in wearables and fashion. Its flexibility allows it to be integrated into clothing, accessories, and even directly onto the skin. This opens the door for dynamic, interactive outfits and accessories that can display information or adapt their form in real time, potentially transforming the wearable tech and fashion industries.
The development team at LG believes this innovation could usher in new business opportunities across various sectors. “We will continue to build a sustainable future display ecosystem through close cooperation with South Korean industry, academia, and research stakeholders,” said Soo-young Yoon, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President of LG Display.
Stretchable Displays and the Future of Electronics
The stretchable display prototype is part of the rapidly advancing field of flexible electronics. By pushing the boundaries of material science and engineering, LG’s stretchable display technology sets the stage for applications requiring durable, adaptable screens that can endure stretching, twisting, and compressing. The potential applications are vast, from consumer electronics to medical devices.
