Landslide caught on cam in Palawan Injures 4

A landslide involving massive rocks and soil injured four people—three of them minors—near the boundary of Barangay Samariñana and Barangay Saraza in Brookes Point, Palawan on Tuesday, May 6.

The incident, which was caught on camera, occurred near Samariñana Dam in Sitio Tambang. According to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), all four victims are related and are residents of Salogon, Brookes Point. They sustained bodily injuries but are now in stable condition.

MDRRMO chief Mohd Ryan Meranda said the incident likely occurred due to softened soil caused by recent rainfall, triggering the collapse of rocks along the dam area.

Following the incident, the MDRRMO conducted an area assessment and concluded, based on data gathered from nearby residents, that the area is prone to landslides.

In coordination with barangay officials, the MDRRMO plans to install warning signs to alert the public about the potential danger in the area. Authorities advised residents and visitors, especially children, to avoid bathing or staying near the foot of the mountain, particularly during the rainy season.

Public warnings have been issued as continuous monitoring and risk assessment are being carried out by local disaster response teams.

Officials are also evaluating whether a relocation or long-term mitigation plan is necessary to address the risks posed by the unstable terrain around the dam.

The MDRRMO urged the community to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories as weather conditions may worsen the situation in the coming weeks.
