Former President Duterte deemed “fit” for trial – ICC medical panel

The months-long debate over the mental fitness of former President Rodrigo Duterte in the pre-trial proceedings has reached a decision.

According to an independent panel of medical experts appointed by the International Criminal Court (ICC), Duterte is capable of attending court hearings.

This finding runs counter to the claims made by the former president’s lawyers regarding his condition.

Because of these findings, the likelihood has increased that the long-delayed confirmation hearings against Duterte will proceed.

However, the ICC has yet to issue an actual ruling on whether the former president is fully fit to stand trial.
