Five police personnel were killed in an ambush in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao del Sur, at about 9 p.m. Saturday, March 28, authorities said.
The incident was confirmed by the Police Regional Office in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR), which said the victims were members of the 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company of the Maguindanao del Sur Police Provincial Office.
Authorities said the police personnel were returning to their detachment after conducting patrol and police visibility operations in Shariff Aguak proper when unidentified armed suspects opened fire on their group. Five officers were killed in the attack, while three others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) condemned the ambush, describing it as a senseless and cowardly act against law enforcement personnel and a threat to peace and order.
Police officials said intensified hot pursuit operations have been launched in coordination with the Armed Forces of the Philippines to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua also strongly condemned the ambush, describing it as a heinous crime.
In an official statement, Macacua extended his condolences to the families of the slain police officers and directed concerned security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to determine those behind the attack.
He added that the Bangsamoro government continues to coordinate with the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines to maintain peace and order in the region.
Authorities urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement by reporting any information related to the incident.
