A 21-year-old female college student was found dead with multiple stab wounds inside her home in Purok 3-A, Barangay La Filipina, Tagum City, Davao del Norte early morning of July 9, police reported.
Sophia Maria Coquilla was discovered lifeless in her bedroom by her parents. According to P/Lt. Col. Frederick Deles, acting chief of the Tagum City Police Station, Coquilla sustained at least 20 stab wounds, which likely caused her death. Her body was still warm when found, leading investigators to believe the attack happened around 5 a.m.
Authorities are now reviewing CCTV footage that may have captured three to four suspects. Deles said the perpetrators may be familiar with the area and could be connected to an earlier burglary at another nearby home, where pieces of jewelry were taken.
Coquilla was reportedly alone when the crime occurred. Some of her gadgets and personal items were also missing, pointing to robbery as a possible motive.
Police believe the suspects may still be hiding within the vicinity, possibly observing the progress of the investigation. Although the footage is not yet clear, authorities are working to enhance it to help identify those involved.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause and time of death. Police urge anyone with helpful information to come forward.
