Father overcomes gambling addiction that nearly destroyed his family: A heartbreaking journey to redemption

Ray G., a filmmaker and father, courageously shared his harrowing journey of falling into the depths of online gambling addiction and his path to recovery. Speaking on Kara David’s Kara Docs, Ray detailed how gambling not only destroyed his finances but also fractured his relationships and nearly cost him his family. Today, he strives to rebuild his life and inspire others to break free from the cycle of addiction.

A Childhood Exposure That Spiraled Into Addiction

Ray’s story begins with early exposure to gambling. Growing up, he witnessed family members regularly engage in card games, creating an environment where gambling seemed normal. “My grandmother played cards with her friends every day. It was part of our family routine,” Ray recalled. This casual exposure left a lasting impression, and his introduction to gambling came even before his formal education.

As a young adult, Ray’s curiosity about gambling intensified. In 2008, he won ₱18,000 from a ₱500 online bet, sparking the illusion that gambling could serve as a reliable livelihood. “I thought I could systematize it and turn gambling into my profession,” he admitted. However, this illusion quickly unraveled, and the wins were overshadowed by mounting losses and an insidious addiction.

The Toll on Family and Finances

Ray initially believed he had control over his gambling, but the habit grew uncontrollable. Soon, the funds meant for his family’s needs were funneled into his addiction. “It got to the point where I was chasing my losses,” he explained. “I stopped caring about winning; I just needed to keep playing.”

The repercussions were devastating. Ray sank deeper into debt, pawned valuables, and borrowed money from friends and relatives, tarnishing his relationships. “My parents were embarrassed because I owed money to almost everyone. Friends would avoid me, knowing I’d ask for loans.”

A turning point came when Ray used money intended for his hospitalized son’s surgery to gamble at an online bingo parlor. “That night, I lost everything,” he admitted, recalling the guilt and shame of prioritizing gambling over his son’s health.

Breaking Free: The Path to Recovery

Hitting rock bottom, Ray realized his addiction had robbed him of his humanity. Exhausted from sleepless nights spent gambling, he decided to take a drastic step: voluntarily entering a rehabilitation center. “That was God’s way of giving me a second chance,” he said.

In rehab, Ray learned to confront his addiction with humility and gratitude. He embraced the discipline of recovery, attending daily support group meetings and implementing structured routines to prevent relapse. For Ray, recovery is an ongoing process. “Recovery has to be my new lifestyle. If I worked hard for my addiction, I need to work twice as hard for my recovery.”

Even after completing the rehab program, Ray continues to visit the center, calling it his “second home.” He now spends his days designing inspirational shirts and creating artwork, donating a portion of his earnings to support others in rehabilitation.

A Message of Hope

Ray’s journey underscores the difficulty but also the possibility of overcoming addiction. “It’s not easy,” he admitted, “but there is hope. Recovery is hard work, but it’s worth it.”

Through his story, Ray hopes to inspire others trapped in the cycle of gambling addiction to seek help and start anew. His message is clear: with discipline, humility, and support, recovery is achievable.
