Elderly woman killed after SUV hits her on pedestrian lane in Davao City

A 77-year-old woman died after she was struck by a sport utility vehicle while crossing a pedestrian lane in Barangay Vicente Hizon Sr., Lanang, Davao City, around 3:30 p.m. on June 2.

The victim was identified as Petra Cawthrone, a resident of the area. The SUV driver was named as Jocel-An Lipranum, a resident of Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

According to an investigation by Sasa Police Station, a separate vehicle had stopped to let the elderly woman cross the street on the pedestrian lane. However, as she proceeded to walk across, she was hit by the oncoming SUV driven by Lipranum.

Cawthrone reportedly slammed onto the pavement after the impact. She was rushed to the hospital but was later declared dead a few hours after the incident.

The Davao City police have filed a case of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against the SUV driver.

Authorities are continuing their probe into the incident and are reminding motorists to observe road safety rules, particularly near pedestrian lanes.
