Chemical canister explosion in GenSan leaves residents sick

Several residents fell ill after a chemical canister exploded on the afternoon of February 1, causing nausea, vomiting, and stomach and eye pain. Four individuals were rushed to the hospital. The incident occurred in Purok 21, Barangay Mabuhay, General Santos City.

According to resident Regino Sitoy, the explosion happened past 4 p.m., releasing a strong ammonia odor into the air. The fumes affected 134 families, totaling 486 individuals, including children.

Barangay officials revealed that the private company responsible for the chemicals had been ordered to cease operations on November 13, 2024. However, the firm allegedly resumed activities, leading to the explosion when a canister was exposed to heat.

City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) head Bong Dacera stressed that harmful chemicals should never be stored in residential areas due to health risks.

Authorities are investigating the company’s liability and potential legal actions.
