Typhoon Champi could regain super typhoon strength Monday night before entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday, when it is expected to be named Rosal, according to the Philippine weather bureau PAGASA.
PAGASA weather specialist Grace Castañeda told Brigada News FM Manila that Champi had maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour near its center and gusts of up to 215 kph. The storm was moving west-northwest at 15 kph.
Tropical cyclone wind signals could be raised over northern and eastern parts of Northern Luzon and some areas of the Bicol Region Monday night or Tuesday morning.
Based on the current forecast track, the highest warning level could reach Signal No. 3 or 4, particularly in Batanes. PAGASA has also not ruled out the possibility that the typhoon could cross extreme Northern Luzon if its projected path shifts southward.
Strong winds are expected to begin affecting areas from Wednesday, while the strongest impacts could be felt from Thursday through Friday in Batanes, Cagayan and nearby areas of Northern Luzon.
If Champi takes a more southerly track, it could also bring rainfall to the Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas from Tuesday through Wednesday.
Meanwhile, isolated rain showers are expected in Metro Manila and nearby areas throughout the week. However, the forecast could still change depending on the typhoon’s movement.
Champi is expected to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility on Saturday.
Residents in potentially affected areas should monitor official PAGASA bulletins for updates on the storm’s track, intensity and possible wind signals. The forecast remains subject to change as the typhoon approaches the country.
