Bus catches fire in Davao de Oro, LTFRB XI orders probe

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Region XI will issue a show cause order to the operator of a passenger bus that caught fire in Mawab, Davao de Oro, as authorities continue investigating the incident.

The fire involved a Davao Metro Shuttle bus traveling to New Bataan. It occurred at Kilometer 67 in Barangay Tuboran on June 29.

According to LTFRB XI Regional Director Nonito Llanos III, the show cause order will require the bus company to explain the circumstances surrounding the incident as part of the agency’s investigation.

Videos recorded by bystanders showed the bus engulfed in flames while passengers hurriedly evacuated the vehicle.

Based on the initial investigation, all passengers were able to jump out of the bus and escape safely.

Authorities said no injuries were reported.

The Bureau of Fire Protection responded to the scene with assistance from other emergency responders, including troops from the Philippine Army’s 10th Infantry Division, who deployed a fire truck to help contain the blaze.

Responding personnel also secured the area and assisted in ensuring the safety of nearby motorists and residents.

The fire was declared under control at around 6 p.m. on the same day.

Authorities have yet to determine the total extent of the damage caused by the incident.

Investigators are also continuing to determine the cause of the fire.

Major Gen. Alvin Luzon, commander of the 10th Infantry Division, said the Army remains committed to supporting partner agencies during emergency situations and protecting communities when needed.

Meanwhile, the LTFRB said its investigation will determine whether any violations or safety issues contributed to the incident.

The agency said the findings of the investigation and the bus operator’s response to the show cause order will be considered in determining any appropriate administrative action.
