A Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) officer was wounded after a BJMP transport van was ambushed by armed men along the CAVITEX coastal road, Parañaque City in what authorities describe as a failed rescue attempt of a Chinese inmate.
According to Parañaque Police Chief Col. Melvin Montante, the BJMP vehicle was returning from a court hearing in Makati when a group of armed suspects intercepted the van. The target was reportedly a Chinese person deprived of liberty (PDL) who was inside the vehicle.
An exchange of gunfire ensued between BJMP personnel and the suspects, resulting in one jail officer sustaining a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The officer was immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment.
As the suspects attempted to flee, one of their vehicles crashed into a tree near the Parañaque Wetland Park. This led to the arrest of six individuals—two Chinese nationals and four Filipinos.
Police confirmed that all six suspects are allegedly involved in various criminal activities, including kidnapping, carnapping, and gun running.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, including how the suspects learned the inmate’s transport schedule and route. The BJMP has not yet released the name of the Chinese PDL.
