A tragic plane crash involving Air India flight AI 171 claimed the lives of 241 people, with only one survivor confirmed.
The flight, bound for Gatwick Airport in London, departed from Ahmedabad, India, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members.
Air India identified the sole survivor as 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh. He is currently recovering at the Civil Hospital in Asarwa, according to official reports.
The passengers on board included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national.
Authorities said those injured in the crash were immediately taken to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Air India CEO Campbell Wilson extended his condolences to the families of the victims. “Our hearts go out to those who lost their loved ones in this terrible accident,” Wilson said.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Rescue and recovery efforts continued throughout the day at the crash site.
Officials have not yet released further details about the incident.
