At least 17 people were killed and more than 20 others injured in a stampede during the Hindu festival of Durga Puja in Kolkata, eastern India.
Local media reported that the incident occurred near an exit gate in the city’s Girish Park area, where heavy rainfall caused overcrowding as devotees rushed to leave the venue.
Durga Puja is an annual Hindu festival that draws large crowds to temporary structures housing idols of the goddess Durga.
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office announced financial assistance of 200,000 rupees for the families of each victim and 50,000 rupees for every injured person.
