4 killed, 17 injured after truck crashes into tree in Southern Leyte

Four people died and 17 others were injured after a truck carrying relatives crashed into a tree in Barangay Tubod, Silago, Southern Leyte, on Saturday, Oct. 3.

According to the Silago police, 21 people were aboard the truck, which was reportedly headed to an island to celebrate the birthday of a relative.

Initial police investigation showed that the truck allegedly experienced brake failure while traveling along a downhill section of the road.

The vehicle eventually crashed into a tree.

The impact caused several passengers to be thrown from the truck. Four of them died in the accident, while the 17 others sustained injuries and were recovering.

Authorities continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The police have not provided further details on the identities of those who died or the conditions of the injured passengers.

The accident happened as the group was traveling together for a family birthday celebration.

Police said the initial investigation pointed to a possible brake failure as the cause of the truck losing control while traveling downhill.
